Oh by the way I am now practicing to drive a tractor (with a trailer). It’s Kubota and I noticed that people here call it kaBUUta… I don’t know why. Anyway it’s quite fun as unlike driving a car, you can see exactly where the tire is facing to and you can actually see if its gona hit anything or not (I never have a clearest idea if the car front is gona hit or not).

そういえば、トラクターの運転の練習してるんだけど、それがクボタのトラクターで、みんなと話をしていて気づいたのがみんなクボタを「かぶぅたぁぁ」って呼ぶ。なぜかは知らない・・・トラクターは車と違って丸見えだから、ぶつかるかどうかとかがわかりやすくていいね。

And it’s another weekend!

Another moist day (the forecast is rain for the next five days…). Apart from my Thursday’s shift, we did our first plant ID (25 plants listed, needed to be remembered by two weeks later.)

今日は木曜のシフトのほかに、初の植物ID　が発表されました。植物を見分けられて、その名前や育ち方などを覚えるのです。とりあえず２５の植物が選ばれて、２週間後にテストがあります。

Furthermore, we went to visit Wildside Nursery and Garden.

そしてさらに、今日はワイルドサイド　ナーサリーに行きました。

It is a garden (and plant nursery) created by Keith Wiley, who developed most of the Garden House structure. His garden is AMAZING. Really, truly mind blowing!!! Any gardeners or even non-gardeners must visit his garden. Unfortunately it is not open all the time and closed in winter. (Summer month Thursdays and Saturdays apart from august closed) I asked him if he draw plans before start making gardens and he doesn’t. Yet his garden is full of thoughts and clever ideas all in order. I think you have to be genius to create a garden like this and obviously a lot of experience.

ワイルドサイド　ナーサリーはここガーデンハウスの前ヘッドガーデナー、キース・ワイリーの庭とナーサリー（植物を育てて売るビジネス）です。ガーデンに関わる人はもちろん、そうでない人も、機会があれば絶対に訪れてほしい庭です。こんな庭見たことない！！キースに案内してもらって庭を見て回ったのだけれど、もう言葉にできません。そして７年間にキースと奥さんのロズが成し遂げた仕事量に脱帽です。

Every second week on Wednesday mornings I work in the spring garden. It is consists of (mostly) shrubs and small trees. Main plants are Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Apart from taking lady ferns out, I pruned a cherry tree (Prunus incise ‘Kojo-no-mai’).

水曜日の朝は２週間に一回スプリング　ガーデンで働きます。主にしゃくなげやつつじが植えられていて、メインの道からちょっとそれたところにあるので、あまりメンテナンスの時間が割かれていないのが実情。今日は増えすぎたシダを取り除いたり、桜の木を剪定したりしました。

I took a picture of it after being pruned but stupidly I didn’t have my memory card in my camera. It did still take photos but it’s on my camera itself (not on SD card) and I don’t have a connection cable for camera – PC…

剪定したあとの木を写真にとったのですが、頭の悪いことにカメラにSDカードを入れ忘れていて、写真は取れたのですがカメラ本体に保存されているためアクセスできません・・・（カメラとPCつなぐコードがないため）

Anyway, it went all well.

まあでもうまくいきました。

Wednesday afternoons are Ad-hoc time. It means either we do Ad-hoc work or covering other days if work didn’t take place for one reason or another (mostly, rain). Today we cleared a little courtyard for the installation of flames for bulbs. The courtyard had some raised beds full of plants which one of the ex-trainees. It was sad to see them get all ripped, so I took some flowers and foliage for vase.

午後はコートヤード内を片付けて、花壇を取りさらって、貴重な球根を育てるためのフレームを持ち込む下準備をしました。去年の見習い生が一生懸命植えた植物を全部捨てなきゃいけなかったので、かわいそう思って花だけでもと思って活けてみました。

A big rain.
大雨・・・

It rained all night with strong wind. It was actually making some noise all night and I had my first NOT great sleep. (Very rare indeed!) It carried on for the moring so we stayed indoors and wiped moldy walls in our accommodation. It is quite damp in this house... Anyway, so that was something to do.
昨日の夜降り続けて、しかも風が強かったから私にしては珍しく雨音でよく眠れませんでした・・・

We met another (we have met quite a few so far) volunteer gardener today. She is quite young (that is unusual, as far as we've seen) and I hope we get on well. Not that I have any complaints about the age of others (Honestly).
もう何人か会ったのだけれど、今日も新しいボランティアの方に会いました。今まであったか方々はけっこう年配の方が多く、でも今日の方は割りと若いのでした・・・仲良くなれるといいな・・・別に年配の方に不満があるわけじゃありませんよー！

In the afternoon, I got to my Tuesdays area, Bulb Meadow. As you can guess from the name, it is all about bulbs here, mostly spring ones (some Antumn ones but not too much. At the moment you can see Cycramen and Colchium).　So there is not much going on at the moment. I spent most of the time pulling out Welsh poppies.

Genus Papaver.... you think.... BUT Welsh poppy is Meconopsis cambrica, Carifornian poppy is Eschscholzia californica. But yeah, field poppy is, finally, Papaver rhoeas.
I can't even pronounce the Latin of Carifornian poppy...
午後にやっと受け持ち場所へ。球根の庭。名前からお察しのとおり、春咲きの球根がメインなので、今はあまりなにもありませぬ・・・今日はウェルッシュ　ポピーを片付けました。
ポピーと一口に（通称で）いっても、みなケシ属（Papaver)と思ったら大間違い！ウェルッシュ　ポピーはMeconopsis、　カリフォルニアン　ポピーは　Eschscholzia。こんなの発音すらできないよー！！

A brand new week!
新しい週です！

I worked in the South African Garden all day today. WEEEEEding.
It's been planted with annuals (from seeds) to replace tender plants that were killed by the last couple of cold winters. It was an emergency measure but because it was very successful and received a lot of positive comments from visitors, we are going to do the same next year.
今日は（月曜のシフトは）南アフリカの庭。で、草取り。
南アフリカの庭というものの、近年の寒い冬で大量の（寒さに弱い）植物が死んでしまったとのこと。で、緊急処置として１年草の種を大量に蒔いてみたらそれが大成功。お客さんの評判もよいし、お金もかからないしで、来年もやることに決定だそうです。

Because these are annuals, we are going to take everything out in late autumn and prepare the area for sowing. But at the moment, we need to keep it nice and tidy (that is, without weeds!). So here comes IDing and eradicating these naughties.
１年草なので秋の終わりには全部片付けて、また来年種を蒔けるように土をならしたりするんだけど、今のところは雑草ぬいてとりあえずなんとか見れるように・・・（ピークは過ぎてだいぶ枯れたのが目立ってきましたが）そこで大事なのが雑草を見分けられること！（簡単と思っても実は奥が深いのです。）

I will have to know names (preferably Latin, as well as common) and have to be able to identify them (even without flowers, preferably the seedlings). I will come back to you with the names once I know them, but here are some pictures...
雑草の名前を調べて覚えていかなければなりません。（できればラテン名も）そして花が咲いてなくても（できればまだ発芽して間もない状態でも）見分けられなければいけません・・・ではいくつか写真を。

Misty morning. Rays were visible because of the mist.
朝は霧がこめて、光の筋が見えました。

Morning was a mentor session with one of the most experienced gardener who runs gardening courses for public here. Walked around in the Quarry Garden and went through some of the weeds ID and tree seedlings. This is rather wild area of the garden and some self-seeders are welcome / allowed here.
午前中は（大）先輩ガーデナーと新しいエリアを歩き回っていろいろご指導いただきました。主に雑草の名前と処理の仕方。このQuarry Garden （採石場）は、前ヘッドガーデナーのキース・ワイリーがデザインして、完成前に打ち切りになってしまったエリアです。今は半ワイルドな感じでメンテされてて、ほかのエリアでは雑草として処理される植物も許されてたりします。

My first weekend now, wondering what to do... rain forecasted :(
１週目が終わって、週末です！（土日休み）何しようかなぁ・・・　でも雨だって。

September!
９月ですね。

We started on our rota today. For me, Thursdays are going to be; Tower Strip 25-27, Ovals bottom, Ovals top and Bowling green (top half). Well, these are the names for different areas.
今日はシフトが始まりました。これからしばらく木曜日はタワーストリップ２５－２７、オーバル（下）、オーバル（上）、ボウリング　グリーンで働きます。これは庭園内でのエリア名です。

また天気もよく、とてもいい１日でした。仕事のあとには自分の部屋でまだ荷物の整理をしているんだけれど、明日は朝にヨガできるように早起きできますように・・・
