I turned one of my jobs into a big one today… I was working in Tower Strip in the morning and there was a Cornus that was looking very sad, actually half (or two thirds) dead. I mentioned it to one of my bosses and was given a permission to take it out. My co-trainee boy helped me and that was good because it would have been half day job otherwise.

今日はひとつ大きめの仕事をしました。というのも、朝働いていたタワー・ストリップというエリアに死にかけたけれど大きなCornus （ハナミズキの一種）があり、それをボスに言ったところ、取り除いていいよと言われたのです。しかしかなり大きな木（といっても２メートルくらいですが）・・・同僚の助けがなければ半日はかかったでしょう・・・

In the afternoon we were invited to Wisteria pruning demonstration by the head gardener. To my surprise in this garden we prune these (we have quite a few) only once a year in mid – late autumn (or later, until February). Books tell you to prune it twice, in summer and in winter. I think twice is good if you want it to look good all the time (as vigorous summer growth could look untidy). Once a year is good for time saving and our head gardener reckons it helps it to flower more as the plant would spend more energy producing leaves and stems if being cut in summer as well.

午後にはヘッドガーデナーによるWisteria（藤）の剪定のお手本を見ました。本屋なんかでは年に２回剪定するというのが通説ですが彼によると年１回がお勧めだそうです。２回の場合は夏と冬なのだけれど、１回なら秋がいいということです。どちらも長所・短所があるのですが・・・私は個人的には２回派かなあ、自分の庭にあったらたぶん２回剪定すると思う。日本ではどうなんだろう・・・

It’s not in flower so I google image searched it but seeing it in flower I still didn’t get it (Now I do after reading why). Can you guess??

なぜそんな名前かというと・・・

保守派議員のことをトゥルー・ブルーと呼ぶことがあるみたいですね、知りませんでしたが。で、花色が真っ青、というわけです。

It was beautiful when the deep red Dahlias and Molinia (tall grass) were back-lit by late summer sun in the Walled Garden... I hope the camera arrives soon!

カメラはまだ届きません。今日は午後とても天気が良くなって濃い赤のダリアとモリニアというグラスに後ろから陽が当たってとてもきれいでした。

A little bit about Phytophthora ramorum…

Phytophthora ramorum　という病原菌について少し。

It is a microorganism that causes Sudden Oak Death. It is thought to spread in rainsplash, mist-laden winds (it is what Dartmoor is famous for!) or watercourses.

サドン・オーク・デスという病気をもたらす病原体。感染は雨水、霧と風　または水路といわれています。

The main hosts are some of Oak (Quercus) species, Rhododendron, Viburnum, Camellia, Kalmia, Pieris, Hamamelis and Syringa.

この病原体に侵されることが報告されている種は以上のとおり。

We are requested to keep a close eye on it and have to go through some tests if there is suspicion…

Today I and one of my colleagues dealt with a dead shrub and we had to disinfect our tools just in case.

気をつけて見ていて、あやしいことがあったら報告しなければいけないらしい。今日は枯れた木を処分したのでそれに使った道具をすべて消毒しました。

Worked with a lot of people today. Kind of nice for a change (because of lots of us on holiday, I worked on my own a lot so far. Not that I mind it...). I and five volunteers cleared Bulb Meadow. We are going to mulch the area with bracken / sand / leaf mould mixture at the end of autumn. Everyone keeps telling me how great the area looks in spring, full of bulbs. I'm very excited to see it in spring!
今日はいままでと打って変わって、たくさんの人と一緒に働きました。ボランティアの方々５人と一緒に、Bulb Meadow（球根の庭）の手入れをしました。秋の終わりにはマルチングします。このエリアは春になると球根類が一面に咲いてそれはそれはきれいなんだそうです・・・

There is a Katsura tree at the bottom of the slope in the Bulb Meadow. Katsura is a Japanese name of Cercidiphyllum trees. (It's always embarrassing when I don't know Japanese plants...) It is described as 'this deciduous tree is known by many as the toffee apple tree thanks to the caramel scent given off by its decaying leaves in autumn.' It is so right and the smell of the air there is amazing! A shame I can't stick a smell on my blog...
そしてそのエリアには１本のカツラの木があります。こっちの人は’りんごアメの木’と呼びます。なぜなら秋になると葉からりんごアメのようなキャラメルのようなとても良い香りがするからです。ブログには香りは添付できません。残念。

Also a shame that the smell is described as 'nice smell of soy sauce'... In Japanese wikipedia (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%AB%E3%83%84%E3%83%A9_%28%E6%A4%8D%E7%89%A9%29)
でも日本のウィキペディアには　’醤油の良いにおいに似ている’ですって・・・

Windy!

風がつおいぃぃ！

I was told to be careful and try not to work under old trees (Lime, Oak).

あまり風の強い日は木の下で仕事をしないようにと言われました。実際天災のほとんどないイギリスですが、風は強い。よく木が倒れて電車が不通になったりします・・・

The garden is just hanging on but mostly getting weaker and weaker everyday… Apart from these Fly Agaric mushrooms!

ガーデンは何とか生き延びて最後の力を振り絞っているようです。でもキノコは今からが伸び時！

The tree is Betula ermanii 'Grayswood Hill'

I hear badgers eat these (True? Tell me if you know…)… what a picture it would be, a badger having one of these mushrooms in its mouth…

I smashed my camera when I fell off my bike so dramatically on Saturday. So I (and you) have to put up with these not so great photos taken by my mobile phone. Actually I didn’t want a camera on my phone and thought I’d never use it, but you never know; it did come handy ;)

土曜にサイクリング中おもいっきり転んでその衝撃でカメラが壊れてしまいました。新しいカメラが来るまではケータイカメラで我慢です・・しかしあれほど要らなかった携帯付属カメラがこんなところで役に立つとは・・！
