ざるのような自分の脳みそが憎い・・・

After four intensive days of horticultural marathon (which was really great), I was a little worn out, physically and mentally. Good day for weeding, that is.

４日間続いた怒涛のセミナーのあと、頭も体もややぼおっとしてます。雑草取りに最適の日。

Oxalis corniculata

Very innocent looking, actually quite pretty. BUT you will soon notice that it’s not that innocent.

オキサリスという雑草。罪のないような顔してますが　すぐにそうでもないことに気付きます。

When you try to pull these out, not only it is actually more difficult to lift the roots, but also as you do it, tiny bits of roots break off and make new plants. It spread by seeds very well, too and the seeds stay viable for many years. The best organic control is to remove the plant as much as possible and then mulch the area so that the root bits and seeds don’t germinate very well.

意外と根ごと取り去るのが難しいだけではなく、そうしようとすると根が細かくちぎれて、ちぎれたそれぞれがまた芽を出すという仕組み。種からも広がります。厄介な子なんです。

今週中にセミナーのことを書いてる時間があるといいなあ。今日はとりあえず早めに寝まーす。

It was cloudy, misty, dark and wet day…

曇り、霧、くらあい湿った日でした・・・

I mulched in Spring Garden, more weeding and raking leaves.

午前中はスプリング　ガーデンでマルチ、草取りと落ち葉集め。

In the afternoon, I scanned all the areas I am supposed to be working in, because I will be away at PGG seminar in West Sussex. It’s going to be four (long) days, intensive (I call it) horticultural boot camp. We are all expected to bring a piece of plant each, and talk about these in the evenings.

そして午後は、木曜と金曜のシフトの場所をささっと見て回って・・というのも、明日から４日間、PGGのセミナーでウエスト　サセックスに行くのです。全員、植物の一部（できれば花つき）を持ってきて、順番にその植物について話すのだそうです・・・

I decided to take Oenothera stricta, Chilean Evening Primrose. This is because I was working in South African Garden on Monday and these plants self-seeded there. We decided to leave these and I think it’s going to look very nice next year. It comes from sandy slope in Chile so it likes sun and poor soil.

私はOenothera stricta　という、まつよいぐさの一種を持っていくことにしました。サウス　アフリカンガーデンに勝手に（植えていないのに、という意味）はえていたのですが、来年のために残しておくことにしました。原種なのにとってもエレガントな花です！チリ産で、日当たりと水はけのいい、あまり肥えていない土がいいそうです。

Hope I will survive the seminar and hopefully make some friends. (I am not great at social occasions but I guess at least we are all interested in gardening so we can always talk about it!)

セミナー生きて帰れますように・・・４日間、かなりハードなスケジュールです。

My apologies for not really enthusiastic blog entries yesterday and today.

昨日今日とあまりやる気のないエントリーですみません。

Today, another 27 (two more than the last time..) plant ID list was announced.

今日はIDのリストが発表されました。前回から２つ増えて２７です。

Luckily I had a few plants that I already knew the name of, including paperbark maple, Acer griseum
中には知っている名前も少し・・たとえばこのAcer griseum

I am going away for PGG seminar from Thursday until Sunday. Hopefully I won’t be too busy to update my blog… but I will see!

今週は木曜から日曜までPGGのセミナーでお出かけです。かなりハードコアなスケジュール。ブログ更新している時間があるといいんだけど。そもそもネットは使えるのか？！

１０月です
The remaining of heat wave slowly fading, the beautiful blue sky turned grey and fog came down in the evening.
急に暑かった日々も過ぎ去り、今日は秋晴れから夕方には曇り・霧。

I spent all day working in the South African Garden, taking everything up. It is very satisfactory job!
With great help by some volunteers, I almost finished one of the beds... but not quite.
今日はサウス・アフリカン・ガーデンで一日中働きました。一年草（ポピー等）を　取り除きます。ボランティアの方々にも手伝っていただき、かなり広範囲を終えました。

Done on right hand side, still to do on the left.　右が終えたところ。左はまたこれから・・・・
