20111028

There was a ceremony for new arboretum development and we invited Carol Klein to plant a tree to mark the day.

It was lovely weather all day and the whole thing went smooth and nice :) Carol was as enthusiastic as you see on TV and very friendly.

I cheekily asked her to sign my book (Grow your own veg) and she gave me a lovely message!

The tree was Betula utilis ‘Buckland’, locally selected (nearest village is called Buckland Monachorum) special Birch.

It was another very wet day. Heavy rain continued up to lunchtime then it stopped being so heavy but kind of insisted… We had a bit of sunshine at 5 minutes to five, basically 5 minutes before we finish.

今日も大雨。昼間で激しく降り続き、その後も緩みはしたものの降り続けました。でも5時5分前にはいきなり晴れ。仕事終了5時。

Here are some pictures of Acer Glade (Aren’t I a woman of her word?). It is looking beautiful and I hope it will continue for a while. So we have to wish for no wind and no sudden drop of temperature.

エイサー(もみじ)グレイド がかなり色づきました。きれいです。このまま風が吹かなくて気温が下がりすぎなければしばらく持ちそうですが・・・どうでしょう。まあだいたい風は強いですよね、この辺は。

Water is flowing properly, thanks to recent rainfalls!
最近の降水で、ちゃんと滝っぽくなってます。

20111026

It has been really funny weather – I took a day off yesterday as I had some guests and went off for some walking on the Moor. It was beautifully sunny in the morning and we had great time doing a pub walk for two and half hours or so. (But the pub was closed on Tuesdays – I have to improve my organising skill…)

Then it started raining, then started raining really hard then continued that way. All the roads were flooded (some of sloped roads were like rivers!) and it hailed a bit as well. So that was a lot of water since Monday, because it rained quite heavily on Monday all day as well.

And today, it was sunny and beautiful to start with, then it got very indecisive again. Sun, rain, sun, rain, both…

Anyway, Acer Grade is looking much nicer with more colours coming up (I will try taking pictures tomorrow!).

And I found this leaf on the ground near the entrance.

But it turned out to be a very familiar tree (at least the genus is).

Here is a giveaway….

Another give away would be a picture of the trunk (bark) but unfortunately this specimen is covered by Ivy.

It is Platanus orientalis cultivar. (Oriental Plane Tree)
