February!!

And finally, we are getting a bit of a chill. Minus 3 degrees for the last two days, not warming up more than 2 degrees during the day. I wore 6 layers on my upper body, my warmest hut and foot warmers (Hokkairo). It was ok, really! My hometown in Japan is getting really cold and their day-time warmest temperature stays minus 3, so I shouldn’t complain.

At one point in January I thought these Melianthus actually may just keep growing and flower this year, but here, it is getting hit by frost now.

Prunus mume ‘Beni- chidori’ is flowering because of warmer period earlier. This is called UME (plum)in Japan, important tree for flowers (first one in spring, followed by MOMO, peach, then by SAKURA, famous cherry) and the fruits we use for pickling and for UMESHU (plum wine).

Begonia I am giving shelter for during winter (moved from our shed) is flowering! This type of begonia are grown indoors mostly for its leaves and as I am terrible with indoor plants, I had never seen these flowers before. To be very honest, I didn’t like this begonia at all and thought it looked rather nasty but now I am getting quite fond of it…

At the moment, we are concentrating on putting up the polytunnels as contractors for the arboretum ground work has just started and we have to empty the old polytunnels. We put skin on a big new polytunnels and it looks rather grand, even though it is made of bits of metals and polythene!

The garden will be open this weekend and all weekend in February.

Hedge laying!

Even though I watched Country File the other day featuring bits of hedge laying, I wasn’t quite sure of the whole procedure. Today was a great opportunity to see and DO IT live, with our great tutor. (By the way, I do not watch country file every week – it’s like jazz, I want to avoid it til I feel like I’m really mature!)

I will not bore you with all the process but if you are interested, I am willing to tell you more!

Here is a finished section. It is amazing how a branch keeps living after being cut so harsh, leaving just one tiny bit connected to the rootstock.

Everyone is working hard – only a week and a bit before Snowdrop Study Day and grand(?) opening for the year!
