Not much to write today as I and many others spent our whole day laying bricks in trenches.
今日はあまり書くことがない・・というのも、一日中レンガを並べていたから。

This is a foundation for raised beds in newly developing area (Arboretum). Until today, I didn't feel a need to listen to my mp3 player but today was the day. It run our of battery towards the end of the day though.
これは建設中の森林エリアの花壇・野菜畑の基礎になります。（普通は基礎にレンガを使うことはありませんが。）今まで１度も仕事中に音楽聞いたりしなかったけど、今日はそれに最適の日でした。途中で電池切れたけど！

But the weather turned really sunny and almost reminded me of summer days.
でも午後は陽が照って、まるで夏の日のようでした。



Hopefully I can do some gardening tomorrow!　(I hear that heat wave is on its way!)
明日はガーデニングできるといいな！

After another very wet weekend, I started on South African Garden. But after tea break, I was called to help digging some trees that had some disease. To my relief, I was not actually digging (you will see what I mean if you saw the size and the number of it) but helping around the mini digger we are hiring at the moment. I drove the tractor up so that the digger can deposit the trees in the trailer.

またまた雨ばかりの週末も明け、今日は（月曜の）サウス・アフリカン　ガーデンで仕事を始めました。しかし休憩の後に、病気になった木たちを掘り出して処分するのを手伝ってくれと言われ、（幸い掘れとは言われませんでしたが）トラクターでパワーシャベルの後についていき、周りでうろうろしながら手伝いました。

It was all going well….

で、順調にいっていたんですが・・・

Until after lunch, we came back and found that the battery on the tractor went flat! And it must had been because I left the key on ignition… I was so sorry and really annoyed by myself as I thought I was very careful with it as I saw it happened before. So it delayed things a bit… It was recovered, a while later by one of my great colleagues.

昼の後にもどってみると・・・なんと・・トラクターのバッテリーがあがってしまっていました！で、おそらく（かなり高確率）私が電源入れっぱなしで放置していたため。そのせいで既に（常に）おしている仕事がさらに遅くなってしまいました。自分に腹が立つのと申し訳なさでいっぱいです。てへ。でも、同僚が同じことやってるのをつい２，３週間前にみたから、自分でも気をつけていたつもりだったんだけどなーしょんぼり。

So in the afternoon I tried hard to make myself useful, helping to lay bricks at the bottom of a trench where concrete will be poured in at some point and will become a foundation for a new area with raised veg beds.

なので午後はせめてなにか役に立とうとがんばりました。よくわからないけどレンガを穴の中に敷いたり。（そこにコンクリ流して基礎を作るらしい）

And then there was our first Plant ID test with the head gardener.

で、そのあとは初の植物IDテスト。

And I scored 100%! Great if I can keep it up!

全問正解！がんばりました。次回もがんばりたいです。

Dew on Stipa gigantea　草に露がついて綺麗でした。

This is how it is in this area, this is 5 mins bike ride from the garden.(I tried my new camera's panorama function.)　このあたりの景色はこんな感じ。ここは庭からチャリで５分くらい・ここには馬と羊がうようよいつも草を食べています。

Another sunny day. The forecast for the weekend is not looking good though…

今日も晴れ。でも週末の天気はよろしくないようです・・・

I completed pruning Wisteria in the Quarry Garden.

クオリー・ガーデンの藤の剪定を終えました。

I also went to feed and change water for doves in Dove Cote.

はと小屋のえさやりと水替えもしました。

And I AM the Heath Scholar.

In the afternoon, there was a talk given by a nursery manager on Chelsea Flower Show exhibit. He was a great lecturer / talker and it was very interested, but on the other hand it made me even less fond of the event as I hear how much plant materials are thrown away because they don’t look perfect on the third week of May. Some of the plants are forced to flower at that time even though it is not natural for these to flower at that time…

午後は公演があって、それに参加しました。チェルシーフラワーショーに毎年参加しているナーサリー（植物を育てて売る会社）のマネージャーが、ショーにまつわる裏話や、どうやって毎年金賞をもらっているかなどなど話していただけました。公演はとても興味深かったのですが、やはり私はチェルシーショー嫌いが深まってしまいました。なんせチェルシーは完璧であることが求められるので、大量に植物を育てて、完璧なもの（葉の色が変わっていない、虫がついていない等）のみを選別し、あとは捨てるというようなこともよく行われています。このご時勢、逆に植物に虫がつくのは普通なんだよーそれが自然界というものなんだよーくらい前面に出してもいいと思うのに。だいたい毎年５月って、出せる植物限られてるではないですか！それを冷蔵庫いれたり暖めたりして無理やり花咲かせて。いいことないよね。

In current climate, when people are trying to be more aware of sustainability, ecology, CO2 emission etc, I don’t think it is quite right to show the public synthetic beauty with no bugs on them.

Anyway, the day was great and it’s weekend!

でもいい一日でした。そして・・・週末だー！

Today was an odd day.

きょうはちょっと変な日でした。

I was asked to help in newly developing area (to be arboretum), being a banksman (woman, rather) for a mini digger and the operator. Just mucking around, really. With a Devon shovel (It is a tool developed in this area, a shovel with a long handle.) which so far I found a bit difficult to deal with (might to do with my height being Japanese average).

まず、新しく工事しているエリア（樹木エリア）の工事の手伝い。ミニパワーシャベルの周りでうろうろして、雑用。運転主がうっかりトレーラーにぶつけてへこませていたのが今日のハイライトでした・・・で、わたしはデボンシャベルという柄の長いシャベルを持たされていたのですがこれがまた（慣れないせいか）使いづらい！たぶん背が高い人向きの道具だと思うんだよなー。

After morning tea break, I was given another session in poly tunnel for watering sometime in the morning.

で朝の休憩後、再度ポリトンネルで水遣りの指導。

Then we were all called for a birthday cake session (one of the girls in tea room was 21 today!).

でもってランチ直前に、ティールームで働いている子の２１歳の誕生日だってんで（こっちでは２１歳は日本の２０歳みたいな感じでけっこう盛大に祝う人が多い）ケーキを食べに呼ばれ・・・

After lunch, I was called to be a model in a photo for advertising in local newspaper, showing off our amazing colony of fry agaric. (See a photo yesterday). I made a narrow escape then, by nominating one of our staff who has been working here nearly 20 years. So I ended up just holding remote flash for the cameraman ;)

でランチ後は、広告に載せる写真のモデルになってほしいと言われ、カメラマンの後についてきのこ群生地（昨日の写真参照）に向かう途中、別のガーデナーの人（２０年近く働いている）を推薦したらカメラマンがそっちを気に入って、なんとかモデルを免れました！で、私はフラッシュを持つ人をしてお手伝い。

He took, though, a picture of me with the mushrooms so that I can have it and show it to whoever I want to… hope he is gona email me the photo as he promised!

でもカメラマンの人が私の写真もとってくれました（個人使用　用）。約束どおりメールで送ってくれるといいなー。

So by the time I got back to be a banksman again, it was almost time to finish the day…

で、またもとの仕事に戻ったころにはほぼ１日終わり。
