WET day.
雨ー霧ー

Mist all morning then heavy rain in the afternoon – evening. I had a session with one of the gardeners in the Front Lawn (I don’t have a picture yet, but I will get one). It’s an area where our head gardener keeps some of his extensive collections of bulbs, mainly snowdrops. So we have to be careful working in this area, not to step on bulbs too much, let alone digging and damaging them!

朝はFront Lawn　エリアで草取り。ここは家のすぐ前なのでかなり気を使っていつもきれいにしないといけないのです。かつ、ここはヘッドガーデナーの情熱であるSnowdrop　の球根がたくさん植えてあって、しかも中には相当珍しいものもあるとか・・・なので足元注意、やたら掘り返したりできないのです。

After that I was back in Bulb Meadow, carrying on with Acer pruning and clearing the area.

んでそのあとはBulb Meadowで先週の続き・・・と思いきや、

Then a guy from Fera (division of Defra) paid his visit to inspect our plants for disease called Phytophthora. One of the kind Phytophthora ramorum is called Oak Sudden Death (In California, it actually doesn’t infect most of Oaks here) He had this little kit to check if a plant has infection of Phytophthora (any kind) on the spot. It works rather like a pregnancy test.

Defra　のなかの　Fera　という機関から人が派遣されてきて、ある病原体が庭園内の植物に取り付いてるかどうかをチェックするというので、ついて回ってお勉強。簡単なキットみたいなもので、その病原体の１種　（Pytophthora, 疫病菌/ ファイトフトラ）にかかっているかどうかがわかるそうです。この中のramorum というのに感染しているのがわかった場合はその植物を焼却処分かつ半径２メートル以内のホスト（この病気を媒介するといわれている植物種）をすべて同じように処分しなければならないそうです。（まだほかにもやらなきゃいけないことがあるんだけど余り深入りしてもつまらないからこの辺で・・・）で、その簡単なキットというのがまた妊娠検査みたいな感じでさ。

これは陰性（感染なし）と出てます。（ここはほっとするところ）

Byt the way, my new safety (steel-toe) boots are not waterproof… They are Caterpillar and otherwise fine, but would like to know if anyone can recommend ones that are waterproof, steel toe, in size 5 / 6 and not much more than 60 pounds…!
